Ingredients
For the Turkey Meatloaf
- 1½ lbs (680 g) lean ground turkey
- 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
- ¾ cup finely shredded carrots
- ½ cup pumpkin purée (100% pure pumpkin)
- ⅓ cup cooked peas
- 2 large eggs
- ¼ cup finely chopped green beans
- 2–4 tablespoons water or dog-safe low-sodium turkey or chicken broth, if needed
Optional Add-Ins
- ½ cup cooked sweet potato, mashed
- ¼ cup finely chopped zucchini
- 1 tablespoon finely chopped fresh parsley
- 1 tablespoon ground flaxseed
- Fish oil, only if appropriate for your dog and dosed according to your veterinarian or the product directions
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a small loaf pan with parchment paper, or use a nonstick loaf pan without adding butter or cooking spray.
Add the ground turkey, rolled oats, carrots, pumpkin purée, peas, eggs, and green beans to a large bowl. Mix gently until all the ingredients are evenly distributed, being careful not to overmix, since overworking ground meat mixtures can make the finished loaf tougher rather than tender. If the mixture seems unusually dry, add water or dog-safe broth a tablespoon at a time until it holds together easily.
Transfer the turkey mixture to the prepared loaf pan and gently press it into an even layer, avoiding packing it too tightly.
Bake for approximately 40 to 50 minutes, or until the center of the meatloaf reaches a safe internal temperature of 165°F (74°C). Because this recipe uses raw ground turkey and egg, checking the internal temperature with a meat thermometer is the most reliable way to confirm the loaf is fully and safely cooked.
Remove the meatloaf from the oven and allow it to cool completely before removing it from the pan.
Slice or crumble the meatloaf into appropriately sized portions for your dog. Smaller dogs may need the meatloaf finely chopped or crumbled further.
