Description

Soft and pillowy hot cross buns filled with sweet apple bits and plump raisins, perfectly spiced with nutmeg and cinnamon.


Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons instant yeast
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 cup warm milk
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 apple, diced (preferably a sweet variety)
  • 1/2 cup raisins or currants
  • 1/2 cup frosting or icing for drizzling

Instructions

  1. Combine the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, instant yeast, salt, ground cinnamon, and nutmeg in a large bowl.
  2. Whisk together the warm milk, melted butter, and eggs in a separate medium bowl.
  3. Pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients, mixing gently until a soft dough forms.
  4. Fold in the diced apples and raisins.
  5. Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for 5-10 minutes.
  6. Place the kneaded dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise for about 1 hour until doubles in size.
  7. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  8. Punch down the dough and divide it into 12 equal pieces, shaping each into a bun.
  9. Cover the buns with a cloth and let them rise for another 30 minutes.
  10. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown.
  11. Drizzle with icing or frosting before serving.

Notes

For make-ahead, prepare the dough a day in advance and let it rise in the fridge overnight for richer flavor.
