Ingredients

  • 4 Beef Cube Steaks
  • 1 cup All-Purpose Flour
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon Black Pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon Garlic Powder
  • 2 Large Eggs
  • 1 cup Buttermilk
  • Vegetable Oil for Frying
  • 1/4 cup of the Frying Oil (for gravy)
  • 1/4 cup All-Purpose Flour (for gravy)
  • 2 cups Milk (for gravy)
  • Salt and Pepper to Taste (for gravy)

Instructions

  1. Start by seasoning the cube steaks liberally with salt and black pepper.
  2. In a shallow dish, mix the flour, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
  3. In another dish, whisk the eggs together with the buttermilk until well combined.
  4. Dredge each seasoned steak in the flour mixture, then dip it into the buttermilk egg mixture, followed by another dip in the flour mixture.
  5. Heat about half an inch of vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
  6. Fry the steaks for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and crispy.
  7. Remove the steaks and let them rest on paper towels to drain excess oil.
  8. For the gravy, pour off all but 1/4 cup of the frying oil and whisk in the flour to create a roux.
  9. Cook for 1-2 minutes until it turns golden, then gradually whisk in the milk and season with salt and pepper to taste.
  10. Serve the crispy chicken fried steak with generous ladles of gravy.
