Chicken Protein Dog Bites

Ingredients

Scale

Let’s take a closer look at why each ingredient in this recipe earns its spot in the mixing bowl.

2 Cups Cooked Chicken Breast, Shredded or Finely Chopped

This is the star of the show. Plain, cooked chicken breast (no salt, seasoning, onion, or garlic) delivers the bulk of the protein in this recipe. Shredding or finely chopping it allows it to blend smoothly with the other ingredients and gives the final treat a pleasant, chewy texture dogs love.

1 Large Egg

Eggs are a nutritional powerhouse for dogs. They provide additional high-quality protein, essential fatty acids, biotin for skin and coat health, and they act as a natural binder — holding your treat mixture together without needing flour or artificial binding agents.

½ Cup Plain Pumpkin Purée (100% Pure Pumpkin)

Not to be confused with sugary pumpkin pie filling, plain pumpkin purée is a fantastic source of fiber, beta-carotene, and vitamins A and C. It supports healthy digestion, helps regulate bowel movements, and adds natural moisture and a mild sweetness that dogs find irresistible.

½ Cup Old-Fashioned Rolled Oats

Oats are a gentle, whole-grain carbohydrate that provide fiber, B vitamins, and a bit of slow-releasing energy. They also help bind the mixture and give the treats a heartier, more satisfying texture. Oats are generally well tolerated by dogs, including many with grain sensitivities (though dogs with confirmed grain allergies should avoid them).

1 Tbsp Chopped Fresh Parsley

Parsley isn’t just a garnish here — it’s a natural breath freshener for dogs and contains antioxidants like vitamin A, vitamin C, and vitamin K. Just be sure to use plain curly-leaf or flat-leaf parsley in small amounts; avoid confusing it with spring parsley (which can be harmful in large quantities).

Optional Add-Ins for Extra Nutrition and Variety

One of the best things about this recipe is how easily it can be customized. Here are the optional add-ins, along with why you might choose to include them:

  • ¼ cup finely grated carrots – Adds crunch, beta-carotene, and fiber; great for dental stimulation as your dog chews.
  • 2 tbsp plain unsweetened Greek yogurt – Boosts protein and adds probiotics that support gut health. Always choose plain and unsweetened, with no xylitol or artificial sweeteners.
  • 1 tbsp ground flaxseed – A source of omega-3 fatty acids, which support skin, coat, and joint health.
  • 2 tbsp cooked sweet potato, mashed – Adds natural sweetness, fiber, and additional vitamin A.
  • 1 tbsp chopped spinach – Provides iron, vitamins, and antioxidants; use sparingly since spinach contains oxalates that aren’t ideal in large amounts.

You don’t need to use all the add-ins at once — pick one or two based on what your dog enjoys or what nutritional boost you’re looking for that week.

Chicken Protein Dog Bites Recipe

Ingredients

  • 2 cups cooked chicken breast, shredded or finely chopped
  • 1 large egg
  • ½ cup plain pumpkin purée (100% pure pumpkin)
  • ½ cup old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 1 tbsp chopped fresh parsley

Optional Add-Ins:

  • ¼ cup finely grated carrots
  • 2 tbsp plain unsweetened Greek yogurt
  • 1 tbsp ground flaxseed
  • 2 tbsp cooked sweet potato, mashed
  • 1 tbsp chopped spinach

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Combine the base ingredients. Add the cooked chicken, egg, pumpkin purée, rolled oats, and parsley to a food processor.
  3. Pulse until the mixture is well combined but still slightly textured — you want some bite to it, not a completely smooth paste.
  4. Add your optional mix-ins, if using, and stir or pulse briefly until evenly distributed throughout the mixture.
  5. Shape the bites. Roll the mixture into small bite-sized balls, or press it into silicone bone-shaped molds for a fun, treat-jar-ready look.
  6. Arrange the bites evenly spaced on the prepared baking sheet.
  7. Bake for 18–22 minutes, or until the bites are firm to the touch and lightly golden on the outside.
  8. Cool completely before serving — this helps the treats firm up and makes them easier for your dog to chew safely.
  9. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days, or freeze for up to 3 months.
