Ingredients
For the Dog Dinner
- 2 cups lean ground beef, fully cooked and drained
- 1½ cups cooked brown or white rice
- ½ cup finely chopped carrots
- ½ cup chopped green beans
- ½ cup pumpkin purée (100% pure pumpkin)
- ¼ cup cooked peas
- ½–1 cup water or dog-safe low-sodium beef broth, as needed
Optional Add-Ins
- ½ cup cooked sweet potato, mashed
- 1 cooked egg, chopped
- ¼ cup plain cooked oats
- 1 tablespoon finely chopped fresh parsley
- Fish oil, only if appropriate for your dog and dosed according to your veterinarian or the product directions
Instructions
Cook the rice according to the package directions using plain water only. Do not add salt, butter, oil, or seasonings.
Cook the lean ground beef thoroughly in a skillet with no oil, salt, onion, garlic, sauces, or seasonings. Drain away as much excess fat as possible.
Steam or boil the carrots, green beans, and peas until tender. Chop the vegetables into appropriately sized pieces for your dog, keeping in mind that smaller pieces are easier and safer for smaller dogs to eat.
Add the cooked beef, rice, carrots, green beans, peas, and pumpkin purée to a large bowl. Mix everything thoroughly, gradually adding water or dog-safe beef broth until the meal reaches a soft, moist consistency.
For smaller dogs, mash or finely chop the ingredients further to make the meal easier to eat.
Allow the food to cool completely to a safe serving temperature before giving it to your dog. Serving food that’s still warm or hot can burn your dog’s mouth, so make sure it’s cooled to a comfortable temperature first.
