Beef & Sweet Potato Dog Biscuits

  • Author: Luna
  • Total Time: Approximately 50 minutes to 1 hour
  • Yield: Varies by cutter size; typically 24–36 biscuits

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup lean ground beef, fully cooked and drained
  • 1 cup cooked sweet potato, mashed and cooled
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 cups old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 1 cup whole-wheat flour

Optional Add-Ins

  • ¼ cup pumpkin purée (100% pure pumpkin)
  • ¼ cup finely shredded carrots
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon ground flaxseed
  • 12 tablespoons water, if needed

Instructions

Step 1: Preheat and Prep

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Step 2: Cook and Cool the Sweet Potato

Cook the sweet potato until completely tender, mash it until smooth, and let it cool. Cooling is important, since hot sweet potato can partially cook the egg prematurely once everything is combined.

Step 3: Cook the Beef

Cook the ground beef thoroughly with no oil, salt, onion, garlic, sauces, or seasoning. Drain off as much excess fat as possible, then let the beef cool before using it in the dough.

Step 4: Make the Oat Flour

Blend 1½ cups of the rolled oats in a food processor until they form a coarse oat flour, leaving the remaining ½ cup of oats whole for texture.

Step 5: Blend the Beef, Sweet Potato, and Egg

Add the cooked beef, mashed sweet potato, and egg to a food processor and pulse briefly until well combined. Pulsing helps break the beef down into smaller, evenly distributed pieces throughout the dough.

Step 6: Add the Dry Ingredients

Transfer the mixture to a large bowl and add the oat flour, the remaining whole rolled oats, and the whole-wheat flour. Mix until a firm, workable dough forms. If the dough feels too sticky, work in a little more oat flour. If it’s too dry, add water a tablespoon at a time until it comes together.

Step 7: Roll and Cut

Roll the dough out on a lightly floured surface to about ¼ inch (6 mm) thick. Cut into bone shapes, paw prints, or small circles using cookie cutters, and arrange the pieces on the prepared baking sheet.

Step 8: Bake

Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, or until the biscuits are firm and lightly golden. Because this recipe contains beef, it’s especially important to bake until the biscuits are fully firm all the way through rather than pulling them early.

Step 9: Cool Completely

Transfer the biscuits to a wire rack and let them cool completely before serving.
