Ingredients
For the Stew
- 1 lb (450 g) lean ground beef or lean beef stew meat, fully cooked and drained
- 1 cup pumpkin purée (100% pure pumpkin)
- 1 cup cooked brown or white rice
- ½ cup finely chopped carrots, cooked until tender
- ½ cup chopped green beans, cooked until tender
- 2–3 cups water or dog-safe low-sodium beef broth, as needed for consistency
Optional Add-Ins
- ¼ cup cooked peas
- ½ cup cooked sweet potato, mashed
- 1 tablespoon finely chopped fresh parsley
- Fish oil, only if appropriate for your dog and dosed according to your veterinarian or the product directions
Instructions
Cook the rice using plain water only, with no salt, butter, oil, or seasonings.
Cook the beef thoroughly with no oil, salt, onion, garlic, sauces, or seasonings. If using stew meat, cook it until fully tender; if using ground beef, cook it through completely. Drain away as much excess fat as possible.
Cook the carrots and green beans until tender, either by steaming, boiling, or simmering them directly in the stew liquid.
In a large pot, combine the cooked beef, pumpkin purée, cooked rice, carrots, and green beans. Gradually add water or dog-safe beef broth, stirring, until the mixture reaches a soft, stew-like consistency.
Bring the stew to a gentle simmer over low heat for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, to let the flavors meld and the consistency settle into a cohesive stew.
Allow the stew to cool completely to a safe serving temperature before giving it to your dog. Serving food that’s still warm or hot can burn your dog’s mouth, so make sure it’s cooled to a comfortable temperature first.
