Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cups apple pie filling
  • Oil for frying
  • 1/2 cup sugar for coating
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon for coating

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
  2. In another bowl, mix together the buttermilk, applesauce, eggs, and vanilla extract.
  3. Carefully combine the wet and dry mixtures until just incorporated.
  4. Heat the oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 350°F (175°C).
  5. Fill a piping bag with the doughnut batter and pipe rounds into the hot oil, frying only a few at a time.
  6. Fry for approximately 2–3 minutes on each side until golden brown.
  7. Once golden, drain the doughnuts on paper towels.
  8. Use a piping bag to fill each doughnut with apple pie filling.
  9. In a small bowl, mix the sugar and cinnamon for the coating and roll each doughnut in it.
  10. Serve warm and enjoy!
