- 4 slices sourdough bread
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1 medium pear, thinly sliced
- 1 medium apple, thinly sliced
- 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
- 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
- 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar
- Salt (to taste)
- Black pepper (to taste)
Instructions
- Caramelize the onions: Melt 1 tablespoon of butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add onions and a pinch of salt, cooking for about 10 minutes until golden brown. Add balsamic vinegar and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes.
- Prepare the sandwich: In the same skillet, melt the remaining butter. On two slices of sourdough, layer half of the cheddar, followed by caramelized onions, apple slices, pear slices, and the remaining cheddar. Top with remaining bread slices.
- Grill to perfection: Grill the sandwich for 4-5 minutes per side until golden brown and cheese melts.
- Serve: Remove from skillet, cool for a minute, slice in half, and serve warm.
Notes
For make-ahead, caramelize onions in advance. Consider using an air fryer or oven to grill sandwiches. Enjoy with tomato soup or sweet potato fries for a complete meal.
