Description
Hoppin’ John is a traditional Southern dish made with black-eyed peas and rice, often flavored with spices and served as a symbol of good luck.
Ingredients

- 1 cup black-eyed peas
- 1 cup long-grain rice
- 4 cups water or broth
- 1 onion, chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 bay leaf
- 1 smoked ham hock (optional)
Instructions
- Soak the black-eyed peas in water overnight, then drain.
- In a large pot, heat olive oil over medium heat and sauté the onion and garlic until translucent.
- Add the soaked black-eyed peas, rice, water or broth, salt, black pepper, cayenne pepper, bay leaf, and ham hock (if using).
- Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for about 30-40 minutes, or until the peas and rice are tender.
- Remove the bay leaf and ham hock, if used, and serve hot.
Notes
- For a vegetarian version, omit the ham hock and use vegetable broth.
- Hoppin’ John is traditionally served with collard greens and cornbread.
- Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
