A classic French dessert, the Chocolate Yule Log (Bûche de Noël) is a rich chocolate cake rolled with a creamy filling, perfect for holiday celebrations.


Ingredients

  • 4 large eggs
  • 100g granulated sugar
  • 100g all-purpose flour
  • 30g unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 200g dark chocolate, chopped
  • 200ml heavy cream
  • 50g powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Chocolate shavings for decoration

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a bowl, whisk the eggs and granulated sugar until pale and fluffy.
  3. Sift together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt, then fold into the egg mixture.
  4. Pour the batter onto the prepared baking sheet and spread evenly.
  5. Bake for 10-12 minutes until the cake springs back when touched.
  6. Remove from the oven and let cool slightly before rolling it up in the parchment paper.
  7. For the filling, melt the dark chocolate and let it cool slightly.
  8. In another bowl, whip the heavy cream with powdered sugar and vanilla until soft peaks form.
  9. Fold the melted chocolate into the whipped cream until well combined.
  10. Unroll the cooled cake, spread the chocolate filling evenly, and roll it back up carefully.
  11. Transfer to a serving platter and frost with remaining filling, then decorate with chocolate shavings.

Notes

  • Make sure to roll the cake while it’s still warm to prevent cracking.
  • You can add a splash of coffee or liqueur to the filling for extra flavor.
  • This dessert can be made a day in advance and stored in the refrigerator.
