Description

These delightful checkered cookies feature contrasting swirls of vanilla and chocolate, making them a visually stunning treat with a soft, tender heart.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup cocoa powder
  • Food coloring (optional)

Instructions

  1. Whisk dry ingredients in a medium bowl until well combined.
  2. Cream together softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy, about 3-5 minutes.
  3. Add egg and vanilla extract, beating until smooth.
  4. Combine the dry mixture with the wet mixture until no flour clumps remain.
  5. Create chocolate dough by mixing cocoa powder into half of the dough.
  6. Roll each half into logs about 1.5 inches in diameter.
  7. Chill the logs wrapped in plastic wrap for at least 30 minutes.
  8. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) while chilling.
  9. Slice the logs into thin rounds and arrange in a checkered pattern on a lined baking sheet.
  10. Bake for 10-12 minutes until edges are just set and lightly golden.

Notes

Make-ahead by preparing dough logs ahead of time and storing them in the fridge or freezer.
